Professional associations are an often-overlooked way to combine career exploration and networking. Most professions have several related professional associations, and many are open to students (and even have student membership rates).
Professional association websites often offer mentor programs, professional development learning opportunities, career resources and job boards, info on local chapters, publications and industry news, and information about graduate education. Look into attending events or conferences, or participate in message boards to jumpstart your networking. Undergraduate students are likely to be rare attendees at these kinds of events, which will help you stand out as a self-starter and motivated learner. This can lead to informational interviews and internship opportunities. Some professional associations may also offer scholarship opportunities to their undergraduate members.
Reading a professional association website can help you gauge your interest in the work. If the resources excite you, you may be on the right track!
